TAR Bureau for Environment Protection currently released "Environment Status Communique of TAR in 2007", telling 40 various nature reserves have been built with the coverage of 408,300 square kilometers, 34.03% of the total area of Tibet Autonomous Region.
By the end of 2007, 40 nature reserves fall into 9 national ones, 6 regional ones and 25 county-level ones. Additionally, 21 ecological zones have been set up in Tibet.
As a typical region with various living things, Tibet has 9,600 wild plants, 798 wild amniotes including 125 national key protection wild animals, over one third of that across the country according to the statistics. Thereinto, the wild yak and Tibetan antelope are national rare animals only inhabit in China. Besides, 90% schizothoracinaes (i.e. mountain carps) of the world live in Tibet while 488 birds including 22 unique Tibetan birds inhabit in Tibet.
