With the fund of 25 million yuan from the central government, the maintenance project in Sekhargutok Monastery, one item in the blueprint of the eleventh five years period in Tibet, has been commenced recently. Early in 2003, specialists on ancient architecture were invited to make the investigation on the site. The buildings covering 14,940 square meters and 519-square-meter frescos were needed to maintain according to the survey.
Meaning "nine-floor prince tower" in Tibetan, it is an ancient monastery of Gegyu Sect (White Sect) of Tibetan Buddhism located in Lhoza County, Lhoka Prefecture of Tibet. The legend tells the monastery was organized to build by Milar Rigba, a senior with Gegyu Sect (White Sect), over 900 years ago. In the period of the 7th Rka Ma Pa, it was enlarged to be a sermon place for believers of Gegyu Sect (White Sect).
In 2001, Sekhargutok Monastery has been confirmed as one of national key cultural relics. Besides Sekhargutok Monastery, the maintenance projects of Tibetan key cultural relics in the plan of the eleventh five years period also include 22 items, such as Tashilhunpo Monastery and Xalhu Monastery, funded with 570 mln yuan in total by the central government, up 200 mln yuan from that of last five years period.
